Choosing the right horsebox size is one of the most important decisions you’ll make as a horse owner. Get it right, and every journey feels straightforward. Get it wrong, and you’ll either be cramped for space or pulling something far bigger than you actually need. Our team here at Cooke Coachbuilders is here to assist and help you to think it through properly.
Start with your horses
The number of horses you transport regularly should be your starting point. A 3.5 tonne horsebox suits those with one or two horses and shorter distances to cover. Step up to a 7.5 tonne, and you gain two to three stalls with more comfortable living quarters for longer trips. If you’re regularly moving three or more horses to competitions, something in the 12 to 16 tonne range is worth considering seriously. Think about the size of your horses, too. A 16hh warmblood needs considerably more space than a 13hh pony, and stall height matters just as much as width.
Think about how you travel
Are you doing day trips to local shows or spending weekends away at events? If you’re frequently staying overnight, the berth specification becomes just as important as the horse area. Many buyers focus entirely on the stalls and overlook how liveable the cab-over or living space actually is. Slideout sections, available on many larger models, make a real difference to comfort when you’re parked up for the night.
Consider your licence
This is where many buyers get caught out. A standard car licence allows you to drive up to 3.5 tonnes. Anything heavier requires the appropriate category licence. If you’re looking at horseboxes for sale in the 7.5 tonne bracket and above, check your licence before you fall in love with a vehicle you can’t legally drive.
New, used or bespoke?
There’s a strong case for bespoke horseboxes if you have specific requirements that off-the-shelf options don’t meet. Custom horseboxes are built around your horses, your travel habits and your preferences, rather than a generic specification. That said, a quality used horsebox can offer excellent value if the condition is sound and the size fits your needs.
The right horsebox is the one that works for your horses and your lifestyle, not simply the biggest one you can afford or the smallest one that fits your budget. Take time to assess what you genuinely need before committing.
