Buying your first horsebox is an exciting milestone, but the one detail that catches many first-time buyers off guard is the licence requirement. Before you start browsing HGV horseboxes or requesting quotes on bespoke horseboxes, it’s worth understanding exactly what you’re legally permitted to drive. Every horsebox has a Gross Vehicle Weight rating, known as GVW. This is the maximum permitted weight of the vehicle when fully loaded with horses, riders, kit and fuel included. It is not the kerb weight of an empty vehicle, and that distinction matters more than most buyers initially realise. Your standard category B car licence covers vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes GVW. The moment you go above that threshold, you need an additional licence category.
For vehicles between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes, you’ll need a category C1 licence. This is a relatively straightforward test to take and is well within reach for most drivers. It opens up a significantly wider range of horseboxes for sale, including models with more stall space and comfortable overnight living quarters.
Above 7.5 tonnes sits the full category C licence, which covers everything up to and including the larger HGV horseboxes. This is what’s commonly referred to as an HGV licence. If you’re considering an 18 or 26 tonne build, this is the category you’ll need.
It’s also worth noting that if your licence was issued before January 1997, you may already hold automatic entitlement to drive vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes. Check your licence carefully before assuming either way.
A common mistake is choosing a smaller horsebox simply to avoid the licencing process. Gaining a C1 licence typically takes a few weeks of preparation and one practical test. Weighed against years of travelling with insufficient space for your horses, it’s a worthwhile investment of time.
