Transporting horses in summer comes with a set of challenges that don’t occur in cooler months. Heat builds quickly inside a horsebox, humidity rises, and horses that travel well in October can become stressed and uncomfortable by July. Getting this right matters for their welfare and your peace of mind.
Horses generate significant body heat, and when several animals are confined in an enclosed space during warm weather, temperatures inside the horsebox can climb well beyond what’s comfortable outside. Add road heat, direct sunlight on the bodywork and restricted airflow, and you have conditions that can cause dehydration and heat stress relatively quickly.
Travel in the cooler parts of the day where possible. Early morning journeys before the heat peaks make a real difference, particularly on longer trips. Plan your route to avoid long stretches in slow-moving traffic where airflow stops completely. Water your horse well before loading and carry enough for the journey. A horse that arrives dehydrated is already stressed before the competition begins. Check your ventilation regularly. Roof vents and fans should be working properly before every summer trip, not just checked once a season. If airflow in your horsebox feels inadequate, that’s worth addressing before the weather gets worse.
A well-specified horsebox does a lot of the heavy lifting here. DEFRA approved ventilation systems, two-way electric fans and temperature and humidity monitoring are standard on quality coach built horseboxes for good reason. If your current vehicle is struggling to manage heat, has poor airflow or lacks proper monitoring, it may be telling you something. Older horseboxes without adequate ventilation can become genuinely uncomfortable environments in July and August, regardless of how well maintained they are in other respects.
A modern bespoke horsebox built with summer travel in mind will include properly positioned roof vents, electric fans in the horse area and temperature monitoring so you know what conditions your horse is actually travelling in, not just what it feels like from the cab.
