Buying a horsebox for the first time is a big decision, and it’s easy to get caught up in the exciting parts before asking the questions that actually matter long term. At Cooke Coachbuilders, we’d rather talk you through these before you order than have you discover the answers after delivery.
How many horses will you actually transport?
Think beyond your current horse. If there’s any chance you’ll add a second horse in future, or regularly travel with a friend’s horse, it’s worth sizing up now rather than trading in within a year or two. Our range runs from 3.5 tonne two-stall models through to 7.5 tonne horseboxes with room for three.
What licence do you hold, or are willing to get?
This one catches people out. Standard car licences only cover vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, so anything larger means a category C1 test. Check this before you fall for a bigger model.
Do you need to stay overnight?
If competitions or long journeys mean staying away, living quarters stop being a nice extra and become essential. Ask what’s actually included as standard rather than sold as an optional upgrade: kitchen fittings and sleeping arrangements vary a lot between models.
New or used?
A new build gives you a specification built entirely around you, while used stock can offer better value if you’re flexible on layout. Either way, ask about service history and how the vehicle has been maintained, and check it carries DEFRA approval.
