At Cooke Coachbuilders, one of the questions we hear most often from first-time buyers is whether they need a 3.5 tonne or a 7.5 tonne horsebox. The answer usually comes down to two things: what licence you hold, and how you actually plan to use the vehicle.

If you passed your driving test after January 1997, your standard car licence only covers vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes MAM (maximum authorised mass). That’s the ceiling for our 3.5 tonne horseboxes, which is why this size remains the most popular starting point for owners who don’t want the cost or time of sitting an additional test.

Anything above 3.5 tonnes, including our 7.5 tonne range, requires a category C1 licence. If you passed your test before 1997, you may already hold C1 entitlement. If not, it means booking theory and practical tests specifically for that category, worth factoring into your timeline before you order.

Licence aside, the two sizes suit different owners. A 3.5 tonne horsebox typically carries two horses with a compact grooms or day living area, built for shorter trips and everyday use. Payload is tight on this size, so it’s worth checking what you’ll actually be loading before you commit: tack, water, hay and passengers all count against your limit.

The 7.5 tonne horsebox gives you 2 to 3 stalls and a proper living area with a kitchen and shower room, so it suits owners doing longer days at competitions or wanting to stay over. The extra tonnage buys you comfort and payload headroom, at the cost of needing that C1 licence.

If you’re only ever making local trips and want to keep things simple, 3.5 tonnes is usually the sensible choice. If you’re regularly away overnight or need more payload margin, it’s worth looking seriously at the 7.5 tonne range even if that means sitting a test first.

Every horsebox we build at Cooke Coachbuilders is made to order, so the specification and layout can be adjusted around how you’ll actually use it. If you’re still weighing up which tonnage fits your needs, get in touch with our team. Call us on 01270 588598, and we’ll help you find the right fit.
